Good morning, Salem.

Later this morning, we’ll publish a much-anticipated update on Oregon’s school performance.

The Oregon Department of Education is releasing its state test score data. The numbers show in broad strokes whether students are reading, writing and doing math at the level expected for their grade.

Reporters and school district leaders get the data a few days early to allow time for analysis and reporting. That’s on the condition we agree not to publish until the specified time – in this case, 8 a.m.

Our report today will go over the basics – how much scores changed, and what school district leaders are doing next.

But there’s a lot more those numbers show us – like trends for different schools, or how students perform based on their family income or gender or race.

Managing Editor Rachel Alexander has been covering this data for years. Whether you’re a parent, student, taxpayer, educator or curious onlooker, she’d like to know what questions you have – about the tests, what numbers mean, what schools are doing or why Oregon has persistently struggled to move the needle for students. Send her your questions to help inform our future coverage: [email protected].
