UPDATE: Man arrested, accused of setting NE Salem business ablaze

UPDATE – 4 p.m. Tuesday

A 40-year-old man is accused of intentionally setting fire to a Northeast Salem business Friday morning.

José Á. García has been arrested on an accusation of first-degree arson and an outstanding warrant. He was lodged at the Marion County Jail, according to Salem police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick.

Hedrick said she did not know García’s city of residence and that information was not immediately available in court records.

Police and firefighters responded around 8 a.m. Friday to a fire at a business in the 3400 block of Northeast Silverton Road.

Witnesses reported that someone had intentionally started the fire.

Silverton Road was closed while fire crews worked to put out the blaze until around noon.

A deputy fire marshal of the Salem Fire Department determined that the fire was “incendiary in nature,” according to Hedrick.

Fire crews responded around 8 a.m. to a two-alarm commercial fire at 3473 Silverton Rd. N.E., according to PulsePoint, a service that shares emergency alerts based on 911 calls. The address is the location of Spice Adult Store.

Northeast Hawthorne Avenue was originally closed as well but was later reopened, according to Deputy Fire Chief Brian Carrara. Police asked drivers to avoid the area and find other routes.

Carrara said shortly after 10 a.m. that police were determining if the fire was an arson. He said 12 units responded but otherwise declined to provide details about the response.

Salem police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said she had no details about the fire, including what caused it.
