A 17-year-old was killed and four other teenagers were injured when a car in which they were riding slammed into a tree on Southeast Fairway Avenue early Saturday, according to the Salem Police Department.

Police didn’t release any identities, but said the teen who died was a passenger. Others in the car, ranging in age from 14 to 17, were taken to Salem and Portland hospitals but no information was immediately available about their conditions.

The crash was reported at 4:15 a.m. in the 6600 block of Fairway Avenue, near a neighborhood called Battlecreek Commons.

“It does appear speed was at least one of the contributing factors,” according to a press release from Salem police.
