For the first time since 2008, the Salem Municipal Airport has commercial flights.

Avelo Airlines inaugural flight to Las Vegas took off this morning fully booked, with passengers including Mayor Chris Hoy, Travel Salem President Angie Villery and Salem Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Hoffert.

It’s the culmination of a years-long, multimillion dollar effort to bring commercial flights back. Salemites can now fly to Las Vegas or Burbank, California on the budget carrier.

A Town Hall open and free to the public will explore issues around Salem’s new wage tax. Salem Reporter is hosting the event Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Elsinore Theatre at 6 p.m. Voters will get a chance to decide whether the tax stays in November.
