Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
In a few hours, months of campaigning, contentious city council meetings and discussions about budgets will come to a head as Salem sees the results of our vote on the city’s proposed payroll tax.
If you’re a city voter and haven’t yet cast your ballot, you have until 8 p.m. to return it to a drop box. Locations in Salem include Roth’s stores, the Marion County Clerk’s Office at 555 Court St. N.E. downtown, and Marion County Health at 3180 Center St. N.E.
Shortly after 8 p.m. tonight, we’ll publish initial results on our election page below for both the payroll tax and the Marion County Fire District #1 levy.
One note about those results: the payroll tax includes voters in both Marion and Polk counties, so individual county election websites won’t have complete results. The Oregon Secretary of State website posts combined results from both counties on its results page here, and we’ll do the math for you if their site lags on Election Night, as it often does.
We’ll have a story soon after on the payroll tax outcome and seek comments from both campaigns about what’s ahead.
We’ll also give you the best estimate from Marion and Polk county election offices of how many ballots remain to be counted, and whether the initial results posted at 8 p.m. are conclusive or not based on those numbers.
Regardless of the election outcome, our team at Salem Reporter will keep doing what we’ve done: taking deeper looks at Salem’s budget and future, asking city officials your questions and reporting what’s ahead.
Here are some of today’s stories. You can always find our latest reports anytime of day or night on our website.
