Your Friday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
City councilors tonight will discuss for the first time a draft ordinance that would tax Salem workers an average of $42 a month to balance the city’s budget.
The Salem City Council would vote at a later date after a public hearing. They aren’t asking voters to weigh in on the tax, which would sustain and expand police, emergency response and homeless services.
Supporters on the budget committee last month said that the funding was needed to maintain city services, and that waiting to put the issue on the ballot would delay the city in getting funding.
Do you agree? What do you think of the payroll tax? Feel free to email your thoughts to Abbey McDonald, our community news reporter, at [email protected].
