Good evening, Salem.

It’s 97 degrees at McNary Field, according to the National Weather Service, but the weather is supposed to cool off over the next few days.

That’s good news for athletes as Salem has a bevy of sporting events coming up. Ironman 70.3 returns Sunday, with people from across the world joining a roster of about 150 Salemites competing for glory. Tomorrow, we’ll bring you a look at some of the local racers and more information about the event.

And next week is Hoopla, the signature basketball tournament, which is coming back for its 26th year with a twist. Founder Jason Unruh is raising money for a land purchase to go toward a year-round multisports complex that could host Hoopla and other events. More on that effort is below.

Salem’s beloved 3×3 basketball tournament returns to the Oregon State Capitol for its 26th year next week. Organizers simultaneously announced plans for an endeavor to build a permanent facility.
