Good morning, Salem.

Expect to see more farm vehicles on Salem roads for the next two months.

As farming season continues, more tractors, combines and other slow-moving farm equipment will be moving through roads and highways in the Salem area. The Oregon Farm Bureau released a statement Wednesday reminding drivers to be aware and cautious when these vehicles are on the road.

Large farm equipment often has blind spots that prevent drivers from easily seeing other traffic, especially when backing up.

Oregon has averaged about 32 crashes involving farm equipment statewide in recent years, with four including serious injuries, according to Oregon Department of Transportation data.

Some key tips for drivers include slowing down, staying further behind farm vehicles, watching out for wide turns and staying calm.

“Remember these are not only your neighbors on the road, but also our husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and valued employees,” Oregon Farm Bureau President Angi Bailey said in the statement. “Please give farmers the space they need to do the job of growing food and fiber for Oregon and beyond.”
