Good morning, Salem.

School districts from Portland to Minnesota are making headlines for providing free meals for all students.

But in Salem-Keizer, that’s nothing new.

The Salem-Keizer School District began offering breakfast and lunch for its nearly 40,000 students free to all in the fall of 2022. It will continue to do so this school year.

Advocates say the practice cuts down on paperwork and stigma for kids who qualify for free lunches by offering them to everyone. Prior to the pandemic, many local schools already offered free meals to all because more than 90% of their students were considered low-income and qualified.

School begins next week for tens of thousands of kids. Before yellow buses fill the roads, the Salem-Keizer School Board will have a work session tonight to talk about their legislative goals for the 2025 session. School funding reform is likely to be a top priority. We’ll keep you posted on their efforts.
