Good morning, Salem.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce on Monday recognized a local volunteer who has coached and mentored tens of thousands of students over the past four-plus decades.

John “Cheeseburger” Witherspoon has served as a father figure for many of the students he supported through youth sports programs, the Boys & Girls Club and Four Corners Elementary School. On Monday, he received the Spirit of Salem Award recognizing community impact. Find that story below.

THE DISCLOSURE FUND – SUCCESS!

You did it, Salem. In just two days, 86 donors contributed $5,110 to Salem Reporter’s Disclosure Fund – beating the goal. All funds will be used exclusively for public records cost, starting with the $4,400 bill from the city of Salem.

Our team will keep you posted as we continue pursuing city records.

Meantime, donors, take a bow. This was truly a vote for transparency in government and we’re proud to be associated with such an effort
