Salem Reporter wins regional journalism award for “Sentenced to the Sidewalk” series

Abbey McDonald’s investigative series on the death of an unsheltered woman in Salem won first place in the 2025 Northwest Excellence in Journalism competition. It is one of the most competitive regional Society of Professional Journalists regional contests in the nation. Reporter Hailey Cook placed second in a photo category for her photos at a Soup Squad meal distribution.

Swanson, Gordon take definitive early leads in Polk County commissioner races

As of initial ballot counts Tuesday night, John Swanson is leading the race for Polk County Commissioner, Position 2, earning 61% of the vote so far. Incumbent Jeremy Gordon has taken 45% of the vote for the Position 3 seat, far outpacing his challengers in a four-way race.

UPDATE: Nordyke appears headed to win in Salem mayor’s race

Incumbent Mayor Julie Hoy’s challenger Vanessa Nordyke, a city councilor, is ahead in the mayor’s race as of late Tuesday night, initial results show. Nordyke has received 55.6% of the vote as of 10 p.m., according to Marion and Polk county data.

Progressives take early lead in most Salem City Council races, initial counts show

Initial ballot counts as of 8 p.m. Tuesday night show progressive candidates Dave Inbody, Linda Nishioka and Micki Varney and conservative candidate Betsy Vega taking an early lead. The races remain too close to call, and more ballots will be counted throughout election night.
