The Latest Stories For You From Salem Reporter

Good morning, Salem.
This week, restorationists will work to remove the invasive Ludwigia plant from the Oxbow Slough at Minto-Brown Island Park.Ludwigia is a green, aquatic plant with yellow flowers that spreads out and chokes up clear waterways, reducing the space for fish to swim, dropping oxygen levels that fish need to thrive and blocking sunlight.Treatment includes spraying contact herbicide, dyed blue, onto the plants. The treatment started Monday, and will go through Friday, Aug. 2. There will be a second round of treatment from Monday, Aug. 26 through Friday, Aug. 30.The city advises visitors to stay out of the slough during treatment times to avoid exposure. The plants will soak up the herbicide within 24 hours, but the dye may be visible for up to two weeks. This will start the first of five years to remove the plant from the Oxbow Slough, which is located near the third parking lot at Minto-Island Brown park.It follows a successful series of Ludwigia treatment at the Willamette Slough.
