The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 61-year-old pedestrian, after he was hit by a vehicle Sunday morning in east Salem.
At 9:59 a.m. a passerby called 911 to report that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on State Street, near 47th Avenue, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The pedestrian, who police identified as Micheal Sissell, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputy Jeremy Schwab, spokesman for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, said he didn’t know where the pedestrian was hit or where he was found by 911 responders.
Schwab said investigators a silver BMW that was driving down State Street at the time of the collision struck Sissell. The driver, 53, who police did not identify, stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Schwab said that Sissell lived within a few blocks of the location where he died.
Much of State Street in east Salem lacks sidewalks. Marion County recently received a $7 million federal grant for improvements to State Street, including building south sidewalks along the road from east of Lancaster Drive to 46th Avenue.
Schwab said that test results will take a while and did not estimate when the crash team will conclude its investigation.
The sheriff’s office has made no arrests or citations.
