Keizer businesses would see jump in police fees under city plan

About once a day, Keizer police respond to a call to the Target store at Keizer Station.
The giant retail company since 2017 has been paying the same fee to support police work as a Keizer homeowner – $6.90 a month.
That would dramatically change under a move by the Keizer City Council to increase the fees to keep the Keizer Police Department running without cuts.

I believe what is needed is a change in policy whereby new construction especially commercial and multi-family properties are NOT given property tax breaks for multiple years thereby shifting more and more of the costs for city services to existing home and business owners. In Oregon property taxes are expected to cover these costs. In the City of Salem it is especially critical as the State owns and uses so much property but does not pay any property taxes and has resisted all efforts to change this arrangement.
