About This Event
[Monmouth, Oregon] - Apple Box Children's Theater is excited to announce their upcoming performance of “The Witch’s Princes,” comic play by Don Zolodis. The performances are free, July 9, 10, 11, at 6 PM, at the outdoor stage next to Rice Auditorium at Western Oregon University. ASL interpreted performance will be on Friday, July 10.
At the opening of “The Witch’s Princess,” the queen is dead. The kingdom is cursed. And the only way to lift the curse is to slay the witch. When Princess Alessandra’s father, the king, offers her hand in marriage to the knight who can slay the evil bog witch and lift the curse, there’s only one thing for the princess to do: Sneak out of the castle and kill the witch herself to avoid marriage. But she’s not going alone because she’s first assembling a crack crew of the deadliest monsters in myth and legend to help. But she discovers the monsters aren’t what they seem, and neither is the witch, or the curse, or the kingdom. It is a rollicking and wild quest of magic and adventure.
Apple Box Children’s Theater has been providing free theater experiences to Polk county kids for over ten years. Driven by volunteers and supported by grants, Apple Box provides arts opportunities to children who might not otherwise have access to them. Amira Phillips, a young actor in Apple Box, says, “It's my first year and I love it!” Kelly Sigrah, a parent and volunteer, added, “Applebox has been a wonderful experience for all three of my kids! They gained confidence both on and offstage, and it has led the way for them to be a part of bigger productions at their schools and in other community theaters.”
This year Ally Warner, the CHS theater teacher shares directing duties with Grace Petersen, a graduating WOU theater student. Central High School school students work backstage for the show for college credit. Part of Apple Box’s mission is to teach all parts of theater, so the younger students learn from the older ones, many of whom are alums of Apple Box.
The upcoming performances, which are scheduled for July 9, 10, and 11, at 6 PM, will be held at the outdoor stage at Leonard W. Rice Auditorium, 344 Knox St N, Monmouth. A special performance will be held at the Monmouth Amphitheater on July 3 as part of the 4th of July festival. ASL translated services will be available for the Friday, July 10th performance. Audience members should bring a lawn chair or blanket.
“The Witch’s Princess” is made possible in part by funding from the Polk County Cultural Coalition, The Pacific Power Foundation, fiscal sponsorship of the Humanities Division of Western Oregon University, and support from Central High School, the Western Oregon University Theater Department and local businesses.
