An updated statement from the Salem Police Department late Thursday morning released few details about the shooting.

Just before 7:30 a.m., officers responded to an area along Portland Road after a 911 call came from an encampment in the area. Police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy said he didn’t have further information on the type or size of the encampment

After arriving on scene, officers say they found a man with a weapon. One officer got into a confrontation with the man, before shooting him, the statement said. The statement did not include how many shots the officer fired. Hardy declined to say what kind of weapon the man had.

According to dispatch records, at least two medic units with the Salem Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Medics treated the man on scene before taking him to the Salem Hospital.

In accordance with state law, the Oregon State Police is leading an investigation into the shooting, because the officer used deadly force.

Per Marion County policy, use of deadly force is defined as “physical force that under the circumstances in which it is used is readily capable of causing death or serious physical injury.”

The last shooting involving a Salem police officer was in January 2025, when an officer shot and killed a man at an apartment complex.

Salem police are asking people to avoid part of Northeast Portland Road after “an officer-involved shooting” Thursday morning.

Around 7:30 a.m., a Salem police officer was involved in a shooting in the 3300 block of Portland Road, police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy said in an email. The scene is near Don Froylan Creamery and the Goodwill Outlet.

There was no immediate information about the officer’s role in the shooting, how many people were involved or whether there were injuries.

Police are actively investigating the shooting, Hardy said.

A social media post at 8:17 a.m. initially alerted people to policy activity in the area.

Police asked commuters to use different routes to avoid Portland Road between Lana Avenue and Bill Frey Drive. The post said there was no ongoing risk to the public, but officers remained on scene.
