Grassroots campaigns largely prevail over big money in Salem city races
For the past several months, voters in Salem have seen candidates for the Salem City Council on billboards, in their mailboxes, at town halls and even face-to-face on their doorsteps.

I am absolutely thrilled that Vanessa will be Mayor! She will keep Salem grounded and honest.
I’m glad we will have a mayor who communicates with all of her constituents, is not afraid to face the press and explain her actions and policy positions and also understands what type of actions result in ethics violations and which do not.
My thanks to anyone who steps up for one of these very difficult volunteer jobs. It can’t be easy to campaign and then to govern.

Marion+Polk First takes their name from DJ Trump’s “America First” nationalist campaign and they claim that Progressive Salem is using national politics to sway voters? “All politics is local”. The vote went as it did because we rely on local politicians to protect our rights when the nationalist trend has ICE agents pulling citizens (citizens!) from their vehicles and throwing them to the ground in east Salem, as reported by this news agency. We rely on our politicians to protect free speech at our local library. What’s more, the conservative movement offered the same “tough on crime, no taxes” message that we simply don’t believe they can deliver.
Some questions have arisen over whether Betsy Bega meets the one year residency requirement to run forward 6 councilor. Can Salem Reporter clear up this matter. Did she live within Ward 6 for 12 full months before the election? There seems to be court eviction documents that suggest she might not have actually lived in the area for a year.
