5 things to do in Salem this week: Cinderella ballet, Saturn planetarium show, yoga and wine night

Here’s a roundup of happenings for Wednesday, Feb. 18 to Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Cinderella ballet performance

Thursday, Feb. 19 – Friday, Feb. 20: The World Ballet Company is bringing Cinderella to the Elsinore Theatre. The show will illustrate the classic fairytale with a ballet production featuring a cast of 40 dancers and over 150 hand-sewn costumes. Shows begin at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m. They run 2 hours with one 20 minute intermission. Tickets start at $38 for children 12 and under, or at $48 for adults. The theatre is at 170 High St. S.E. 

Saturn planetarium show

Friday, Feb. 20: The Chemeketa Community College Planetarium is offering a close-up look of Saturn in their “Ring World” show. The presentation will take visitors through footage taken by Cassini, a spacecraft that orbited Saturn between 2004 and 2017. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and the doors open at 7:10 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults or $4 for children and students. The planetarium is in Building 2, room 171 on the main campus at 4000 Lancaster Dr. N.E. Additional shows will be held Feb. 27 and March 6 and 13. 

“Dragtastic!” drag show

Saturday, Feb. 21: Six Oregon drag queens will perform at the Grand Theatre for “Dragtastic!,” hosted by Salem drag queen RiRi Caliente. The show is 18 and over. Doors open at 7 p.m., and it runs from 8 – 11 p.m. Admission is $20. Tickets can be bought online. The theatre is at 191 High St. 

Octopus drop-in craft 

*Thursday, Feb. 19: Salem teenagers can make an octopus at the Salem Public Library’s drop-in craft night in honor of this year’s Salem Reads book, “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” Attendees can bring any craft project they are working on for the craft night, from crochet to drawing to beading. The library offers free fiber art supplies and other crafting materials. No registration is required and attendance is free. It is open to all middle and high school-aged youth, and starts at 4:30 p.m. The library is at 585 Liberty St. S.E. 

Yoga and wine night

Monday, Feb. 23: Chemeketa Cellars will host a wine tasting and 60-minute yoga class. The tasting room will be open 5 – 8 p.m., where beer, cider, wine and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase, along with chocolate truffles. The yoga class will run 6 – 7 p.m., and a donation of $5 – 10 is suggested for the class. The cellars are at 215 Doaks Ferry Rd. N.W.
