Salem pedestrian killed in early morning fatal crash on Commercial Street

A Salem pedestrian was killed in an early morning crash on Southeast Commercial Street Sunday, according to police.

A driver heading south in an SUV on Southeast Commercial Street hit Brittany J. Hochstetler, 32, as she was in the roadway near Southeast Hilfiker Lane, the Salem Police Department said in a statement Sunday.

The crash was reported at 2:19 a.m. and responders arrived within minutes, according to dispatch records.

Witnesses and first responders provided “life-saving efforts” to Hochstetler, but she was declared dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the SUV, Cameron Smith, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

The roadway was closed for around two hours after the crash, and officers cleared the scene around 8:20 a.m., dispatch logs show.

This is the Salem area’s 13th fatal crash of 2025, according to Salem Reporter’s coverage.
