Troopers find human skull on I-5 near Salem

Oregon State Police troopers found a human skull on Interstate 5 Monday morning.

State police responded to the northbound lanes of the highway near milepost 260 in Salem after an Oregon Department of Corrections cleanup crew located a “suspicious object,” the agency said in a news release Wednesday night.

Troopers located a small backpack containing the skull and transported it to the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office, who are investigating its identity.

The skull likely belonged to a woman in her late 30s or 40s, police said, but had no identifiable features.

State police said they would not release any further information.
