John N. Bishop, a former sheriff and until recently executive director of the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association, pleaded guilty to first-degree theft Friday in Marion County Circuit Court.
According to court records, Bishop, of Sublimity, faces 24 months of probation and must pay $13,014 restitution to the association. The association said in a news release that he also must surrender his state certificate as a police officer.
According to his plea agreement, Bishop admitted to stealing from the association for three years ending last April.
Bishop was sheriff in Curry County before taking the helm of the sheriffs association, which is based in Salem.
Oregon PERS reported Bishop has drawn a public retirement of $38,304 a year since 2014. The association’s federal tax return for 2017 showed Bishop was paid $109,000.
Bishop was hired at the Curry County Sheriff’s Office in 1989 and later went on to work at the Brookings Police Department until 2008 when he became Curry County’s Sheriff.
Marion County Sheriff Jason Myers retired from his office in June to join the sheriffs association.
