Your Thursday evening update – Salem news that matters

Good evening, Salem!

We had an unusual visitor to the Salem Reporter newsroom today – a juvenile bat.

This little critter was hanging around above an office door when spotted by a reporter. What do you do about a bat in a downtown office building? First, you tweet about it. Then you get a touch worried. Then you call the pest folks.

The process was quick – the pest expert netted the bat, put him in a plastic container and headed for the outdoors to release the animal. All bats require special handling because, by law, they are federally protected wildlife.

So, the creature we named Balthazar is off doing whatever wild bats do. “No bats or reporters were harmed in the day’s chaos,” reports Managing Editor Rachel Alexander.

With order restored, the team at Salem Reporter still managed to cover some local news today. Remember, you can see all of our stories anytime you want on our website.
