Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Gov. Kate Brown on Tuesday announced her latest clemency effort, commuting the sentences of all 17 people on Oregon’s death row to life without parole.

Those impacted include some of the state’s most notorious killers, including Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who in 2011 were sentenced to death for bombing a Woodburn bank, killing two police officers in the process.

The action is the latest step to effectively end the death penalty in Oregon, after Brown continued a moratorium on executions during her governorship. The state’s last execution was in 1994.
