Salem police arrest teen suspect in Winco parking lot shooting

Salem police on Monday arrested a 16-year-old boy suspected in a shooting that injured two adults in southeast Salem last week.

The teen was arrested at a home in the 300 block of Northeast 25th Street around 3 p.m., police said in a Monday evening news release.

He was charged with two counts each of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, as well as unlawful use of a weapon. The teen was lodged at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

Salem police do not release the names of minors suspected of crimes, and juvenile court records are generally confidential under state law.

The shooting occurred Tuesday, Dec. 6 in the parking lot shared by the southeast Salem Winco and several other stores and restaurants in the 1200 block of Southeast Lancaster Drive.

Witnesses said shots rang out around 9:45 p.m. and reported someone in a vehicle fired at another vehicle, with both vehicles then fleeing the area.

Less than five minutes later, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received the call reporting two people with gunshot wounds in a nearby parking lot. Police determined they were the victims in the shooting.

The two victims, 19 and 22, both suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were taken to Salem Hospital, police said.
