Your Friday evening update on Salem news

Good evening and welcome to the weekend….
In recent days, we’re shared with you the stories of those working in the Salem-Keizer School District who perform in ways that their peers notice.
They have each been nominated for a Crystal Apple. The awards are presented by the McLaran Leadership Foundation and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce at the Salem Convention Center. The event has been sold out for days.
We’ll bring you the winners, but we wanted to share again the stories of some of the nominees.
Rahel Owenya is the sole native Swahili speaker employed by the Salem-Keizer School District, playing the role of translator, social worker, tutor, transportation service and whatever else Swahili-speaking families might need.

Dennise Pozos Gonzalez teaches both history and literature in Spanish, work which often requires her to translate her own materials for her students at West Salem High School.

Jeannette Aguirre She makes a point of getting to know parents, calling home to let them know when students at Roberts High School are doing well in class or making progress.
CRYSTALS: ‘Fate’ led alternative school counselor to her calling
Margaret Hill knows sometimes her students at Bush Elementary need to let off a little steam so is a poster with several exercises kids can do – jumping jacks or donkey kicks.
CRYSTALS: A former ‘fidget kid’ keeps it real while mentoring newer teachers
