Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening….
Police and school officials have released some new details on the arrest of a 17-year-old boy charged with bringing a loaded gun and a knife to South Salem High School on Wednesday.
The information came several hours after Salem Reporter emailed questions to the Salem Police Department and Salem-Keizer School District.
Here’s what we learned from police this afternoon:
– The teen was carrying a backpack and ran from inside the school out to “a vehicle he was associated with,” which was parked on a city street.
– The gun police seized was a handgun.
– Police took no additional actions at any other schools as “we were quickly able to identify the involved school and take action.”
The school district said police responded close to noon, meaning some students would have been at lunch and others in class. South Salem High School didn’t go into a lockdown, and there were no schedule changes.
Salem Reporter has requested public records to determine why the community wasn’t alerted to this development until eight hours after they responded to South Salem High School. Parents are reporting that their students at the school were not told anything about the armed student while classes continued as normal.
This is a story that we will continue developing.
