Good evening, Salem.
The federal government is set to shut down at midnight unless both parties in Congress can come to a last-minute deal on spending.
The immediate impact in Salem would be several hundred federal workers furloughed, according to data from the Oregon Employment Department. Their numbers on federal employment are about a year old, so the true figures may differ.
Based on their records, Oregon has about 30,000 federal employees, the agency estimates. About two in three work so-called “essential” jobs and would be asked to report to work even if the government shuts down.
Employees of the U.S. Postal Service, which doesn’t rely on money from Congress to operate, would also remain at work. USPS is by far the largest federal agency employer in Oregon, followed by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Marion County has nearly 1,500 federal employees, and OED estimated about 450 of those would be furloughed during a shutdown. Polk County had 89 federal employees, with the state estimating 18 would be furloughed.
Our team will keep an eye on local impacts and stay in touch with Oregon’s federal delegation to Congress.
