Good evening, Salem.
Our local transit board is likely to have a packed meeting tonight.
Cherriots’ board of directors isn’t scheduled to vote tonight on a payroll tax proposal that has local business groups up in arms. Board members, who are appointed by the governor, said they’re likely to decide later this fall whether to impose the tax or take it to voters.
But the Salem Chamber has urged opponents of the tax to pack the 5:30 p.m. meeting and speak out against it.
Our team last week put out more details on the proposal – what it would fund, who would pay and how Cherriots got here. There’s also one remaining Cherriots open house to ask officials questions about their plans for the tax and service expansions. That’s on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Seymour Center, 375 Portland Rd. N.E. #190.
