Good evening, Salem.

Tuesday’s city council meeting clocked in at over five hours – the longest deliberations since last July’s heated meeting on a proposed payroll tax.

On the agenda: a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, drafted by the city’s Human Rights Commission.

Councilors ultimately voted 5-4 to adopt an alternate resolution, written by Councilors Virginia Stapleton and Linda Nishioka, that removed language calling Israel’s actions in Gaza a “genocide.” That came after hours of public testimony from a diverse group of speakers and dozens of pages of written comments from Salemites on all sides of the issue.
