Good evening, Salem.

Salem Service Day, the annual summer event that gives kids a chance to see the city’s biggest vehicles up close, has been canceled.

The decision to cancel it this year came down to staffing challenges and budget considerations, according to Trevor Smith, city spokesman.

“While we appreciate the value of the event, it takes many hours of staff time from Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Center 50+, Salem Public Library, Police and Fire Departments to deliver,” he said.

The move comes as the city works to finalize its budget. Last month, the city’s budget committee voted to keep the water on at city splash pads this year, which were proposed to shut down to save money. Read more about that here.
