Good evening, Salem.

Salem police determined a report of a possible bomb at Geer Park was actually a modified firework.

The department’s bomb squad was called to the south Salem park around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, March 26, after a community member reported a possible pipe bomb on a bench.

Robots and other tools assessed the device and rendered it safe, according to a police department news release. It’s still not clear how or why it ended up on a park bench. The squad has responded to 22 incidents so far this year, the release said.
