The man accused of stabbing 12 people at Salem’s Union Gospel Mission last week has a long history of threatening violence.

He’s pulled knives on apparent strangers several times before, court records show.

And he’s been in an out of mental health treatment and restoration, often in connection with criminal cases.

One of Salem’s top social service executives sees his story as the latest example that Oregon doesn’t have a system to adequately help people who are profoundly mentally ill and prone to violence.

Reporter Ardeshir Tabrizian produced this detailed report of Williams’ history prior to the stabbing that left blood splattered across the floor of Salem’s largest homeless shelter.
