The U.S. Senate continues to debate amendments to the “big beautiful bill” that is a centerpiece of President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda. It would extend tax breaks first passed in 2017, increase spending on mass deportation and national defense while making steep cuts to social safety net programs.
You can follow live Washington Post here. The president has asked Republicans to deliver the bill to his desk by July 4, while Democrats remain united in opposition. We’ll keep a close eye on what any federal changes mean for people in Salem.
In other economic news, more U.S. renters are falling behind. Local commercial brokerage SVN Commercial Advisors wrote about new data showing 85% on-time rent payments in May. That number has been declining for nearly two years.
“National rent collection trends indicate that more US renters are struggling to meet their monthly financial obligations, with late payments accelerating more rapidly among younger and lower-income renters,” the agency said in its latest news update.
