Good evening, Salem.
If you are a Reddit regular, you likely saw a recent discussion about a new box on a south Salem telephone pole.
Witnesses reported the box mysteriously appeared over the weekend. It sparked concerns and questions from the community, including speculation about potential law enforcement activity or a hidden camera. In comments online and emails to our reporters, people shared that they’d reached out to Salem police and Portland General Electric. Both agencies said the box wasn’t theirs.
One community member reported that a sign had been made at the pole’s base – calling out the box and alerting passersby they could be under surveillance.
Late this morning, we took it upon ourselves to take a look at the box causing such a stir. When one of our reporters got to the site, the telephone pole was box-less. The sign bringing attention to the box was also gone.
The box mystery remains unsolved.
