Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
A 29-year-old man was found dead of a gunshot wound just hours into the new year in front of a Salem bar. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide.
It’s yet another incidence of gun violence in Salem, which has seen an alarming rise in shootings over the past five years. A November report commissioned by Salem police found shootings had doubled since 2018, with teenagers increasingly involved as both victims and suspects.
It’s an issue that warrants community attention and a community response – not something police or schools can address on their own. To get the conversation going, Salem Reporter is convening a Town Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. at the Elsinore Theatre.
We have more detail in the note below from Editor Les Zaitz. And tomorrow, we’ll publish a deeper look at northeast and east Salem leaders who work daily to address violence and strengthen neighborhoods and families, and the work they’ve done since the 1990s, often with few resources.
