Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

We, like you, are eager to see the end of Salem’s ice blanket.

If you missed our earlier email and announcements, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our scheduled Town Hall on Gun Violence event. Though roads are improving, we don’t want to put anyone at risk traveling.

We are working to reschedule – stay tuned!

Speaking of ice impacts, many Salem restaurants and small businesses could use your support in the coming days.

Ice storm closures have meant canceled reservations and lost revenue, and many restaurants and stores are opening today or Thursday for the first time in nearly a week. Many are posting on Facebook and in the Salem Eats Facebook group with updates on open hours or early closures.

“We lost a few days of business on an already difficult month,” wrote the owners of Chubby Bao House on Facebook, echoing sentiments from many local restaurant owners. “We appreciate your support.”

Finally, we’ve been heartened by several notes of thanks from readers for our coverage of the ice storm.

“Just wanted to drop a note and say thanks for being the go to source for weather for all of us in Salem. It’s nice to have an up to the hour report on something that effects us all,” one reader wrote.

“Thank you so much for having up to the early morning ice storm news today! I needed to know if I could get out on roads this morning for an appointment, after my weather app was wrong most of the afternoon and into the night about conditions. I’m a subscriber anyway but extra grateful today for a truly local news source!” another said.

Here’s some of today’s news. You can always find our latest reports anytime on our website.
