Your Monday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

We’ve fielded many questions and comments today from readers about our reporting on an immigration arrest in Salem on Sunday. We learned of the incident from advocacy groups, who said agents injured a man while trying to arrest him. Today’s newsletter includes an updated story.

Several readers questioned why our story relied on accounts from self-described advocacy groups or claimed we didn’t verify information before reporting it.

Reporter Madeleine Moore spoke with a woman who responds to local immigration incidents through the Oregon for All coalition, as well as the group’s spokeswoman. Our account relied on the information they shared, but Moore also took many steps to verify the information we could and seek context – both on Sunday evening, when the initial reports emerged, and ongoing today.

That included calls to both Salem police and fire officials. Both confirmed details of the incident. The fire department confirmed medics responded to the scene at the time advocates described, and the police department confirmed Salem Health had alerted them to the situation.

A video widely shared on social media also showed an incident that appeared to be an immigration arrest in the Mega Foods parking lot at the same time.

We also contacted both Salem Health, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement media representatives as soon as we learned of the incident. We asked each institution to verify details of the accounts and asked specific questions about the incident. Salem Health officials responded Monday afternoon with a general statement.

Federal agencies have yet to respond after multiple inquiries Sunday and today. If they do, we’ll provide their account. Our aim is always to provide as much relevant context and information as we can – and to inform our readers of our efforts to do so.
