Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

The Gerry Frank Ampihtheater at Riverfront Park will be lit bright tonight thanks to a local cancer survivor and advocate.

Seven-time cancer survivor Kathy Ottele is putting on the annual Lights of Hope event here, part of the American Cancer Society’s larger campaign to pay tribute to survivors and advocate for federal cancer research funding. Reporter Abbey McDonald spoke with Ottele ahead of the 2023 event.

The event is at 7 p.m., and the amphitheater is in the park’s south end at 230 Front St. S.E. Ottele has already raised more than $26,000 this year for the society’s Cancer Action Network.
