Two men killed in unrelated overnight shootings Wednesday, police investigating

Update, Wednesday, Aug. 27, 5:15 p.m.: Salem police identified the victims as Nicholas M. MacFawn, 30, of Salem, and Jacob Collazo, 60. Collazo lived in a campsite at Wallace Marine Park, police said.

Two men were killed early Wednesday morning in unrelated shootings, according to Salem police.

The first shooting was reported around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a witness called to report a crash near the intersection of 40th Place and Southeast Carson Drive and a man lying in the road, according to a Wednesday statement from the Salem Police Department.

Officers arrived on scene to find the man, 30, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Salem Hospital where he died from his injuries, the statement said.

Southeast Carson Drive is closed between 40th Place and Southeast Coolidge Drive, police posted on X.

Around one hour later, at 1:30 a.m., a caller reported gunshots at a homeless camp inside of Wallace Marine Park, police said.

Police responded to the northern area of the park and found a 60-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers carried the man out of the wooded area where he was found and brought him to paramedics who tried to provide care, the statement said.

The victim was transported to Salem Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.

Police believe the two shootings are unrelated and isolated instances, the statement said.

The department is withholding the names of both victims as they notify their families.

The statement did not include how many gunshot wounds either victim sustained. There was no mention of an arrest in either shooting or potential suspects.

Salem police detectives are currently investigating both homicides. Police said “due to limited resources,” the Oregon State Police is assisting with the Wallace Marine Park shooting investigation.
