Good evening, Salem.
On May 20, you’ll be asked to vote on raising your property taxes to avoid deep cuts to Salem’s public library, parks maintenance and other services.
Our Town Hall tomorrow at the Elsinore Theatre will dive into the proposal. It starts at 6 p.m. and is free, though please grab a ticket here so the crew can plan ahead.
Editor Les Zaitz’s column below has more on what to expect.
We also launched our series, “Sentenced to the Sidewalk,” today.
In three parts, reporter Abbey McDonald takes a deep look at how Oregon’s broken civil commitment and mental health systems leave unsheltered people with profound mental illnesses to die from neglect on the streets.
Tomorrow morning, we’ll publish part 2, which explains how Salem got to a place where the hospital’s emergency psychiatric unit is practically the only option available.
Look for that in our morning newsletter. And if you’re a regular reader who wants to share this important journalism with the community, please pass this along to a friend.
