Good morning, Salem.

The federal government may be heading toward a shutdown beginning Sunday, Oct. 1 – but we have some good news if you receive food or cash benefits.

We asked state agencies about whether they’ll be able to continue paying Oregonians who rely on food stamps, welfare or Women, Infants and Children benefits if the federal government stops paying its bills. The answer is yes, at least for now.

Oregon has enough money in hand to continue paying food stamps, also known as SNAP, benefits through the month of October in the event of a government shutdown, said Jake Sunderland, spokesman for the Department of Human Services.

That’s also true of Temporary Aid to Needy Families, also known as welfare.

Pregnant women, infants and children who rely on WIC are set through mid-December. The state has enough money on hand to continue paying benefits through then without federal dollars, the Oregon Health Authority said.

We’ll keep you posted on what a federal government shutdown means in Salem if one does happen. Remember, you can always find our latest reports anytime of day or night on our website.
