Good morning, Salem.

A colorful nature scene is the newest addition to Salem’s Hoodview Park.

The northeast Salem park recently got a fresh coat of paint along a fence line through a project with the Northgate Neighborhood Association.

Kaethe Mentrum, parks chair for the association, said the project aimed to bring some beauty to the park while discouraging tagging and graffiti in an area that once looked like a “war zone” because of all the cover-ups.

“So far, we have had numerous positive comments from walkers by. Some were offering money to buy more paint, some brought over their paint they are no longer using because they were moving, some boys came on bicycles and asked what is it going to be next?” she said in an email.

“Our belief is that the more people there are who come to enjoy the art murals, the fewer taggers there will be. This serves as an attraction for the community to continue to come out to the park.”

Brigitte Miller was the lead artist, with about $800 for supplies provided from the city’s community engagement fund. Mentrum has designed other scenes for the fences and said the association plans to continue painting in the spring.
