Last week’s release of state test score data prompted a question from several of our readers: how can I help?

With three in four local third graders struggling to read at grade level, it’s an urgent issue for Salem. We’re hoping to round up a list of ideas later this week. But for now, here’s one: contribute to a local book drive.

Two Blanchet Catholic School students are collecting books for kids age 13 and under as part of a senior project. Books can be dropped of at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4227 Lone Oak Rd. S.E. through Oct. 12.

“Our goal is to get more books into the hands of kids in our area, as a small way to help combat low literacy rates and help foster a love of reading in local children and families,” they said in a flyer.
