The Latest Stories For You From Salem Reporter

Good morning, Salem.
We apologize if you’re receiving this email twice – we inadvertently sent it out early yesterday to some readers.
Salem will select its next mayor in about three weeks.
There’s a lot of campaign rhetoric flying around as Mayor Julie Hoy makes her case for a second term against challenger Councilor Vanessa Nordyke.
The two have served together on the Salem City Council for three years. Salem Reporter has covered just about every meeting in that time. We decided to look back at their voting records to see how often they disagree – and over what.
Our analysis below shows that the two usually vote together. That’s not a surprise for anyone who follows city politics. That doesn’t necessarily mean they agree on hot-button issues. Rather, both said it reflects that city business is often routine or nonpartisan. It’s more about keeping the lights on than making bold choices.
But the two have been at odds over the years – sometimes in high-profile matters, like the city’s response to immigration enforcement, and sometimes over mundane issues like whether a meeting should go on past 10:25 p.m.
We’ll let you weigh their records as you receive your ballot and decide how to vote.

READERS REACT: “Thanks Abbey for thorough, balanced reporting. While I share Mr. Martinez concerns, doing something bold is too loose of a solution to garner my vote. We are suffering the consequences of bold moves at the national level. I appreciate Ms. Nishioka’s compassion and experience with managing the unhoused. It is a worldwide issue magnified by the lens of ridiculous amounts of money in the hands a few. Thank you to both candidates for caring about our community.” -Sharon, commenting on Abbey McDonald’s profile of the Ward 2 city council race. ”
