Good morning, Salem.

If you’ve run into roadblocks trying to drive around Salem’s industrial and brewery district, there’s good news ahead – sort of.

Western University of Health Sciences Lebanon Oregon

The city is moving its road closure at Southeast McGilchrist Street on July 1. The intersection at McGilchrist and 22nd will reopen, but McGilchrist will be closed from 19th to 22nd streets.

The shift is a milestone in the multimillion dollar, years-long project to make the southeast Salem street a modern roadway with bike lanes, pedestrian safety features and flood control. It’s funded in part by the infrastructure bond Salem voters approved in 2022, as well as federal money.

The next phase includes culvert replacement for the east fork of the Pringle Creek, which should make the roadway flood less during heavy rains.

Businesses can be accessed via 19th or 22nd streets, the city said. The affected section of road includes several local restaurants: Santiam Brewing, Black Sheep Cafe and Manila Fiesta, as well as event venue The BAD Space.

Local events: Salem Reporter will publish our monthly events calendar for July this Friday, June 28. If you have an event to submit, please email Managing Editor Rachel Alexander at [email protected]. Include the date, time, a brief description, cost and link to tickets or more information.
