The Latest Stories For You From Salem Reporter

Good morning, Salem.
Salem police are adding enforcement on Southeast Mission Street at 25th Street, and Northeast Commercial Street at Marion Street.
The program is expanding from four current intersections: Northeast Silverton & Fisher roads, Northeast Center Street & Hawthorne Avenue, Southeast Commercial Street & Madrona Avenue, and Southeast Commercial Street & Kuebler Boulevard.
Each location has four cameras connected to the traffic signal which automatically detects whether the vehicle stops for the red light or exceeds the posted speed limit, police said in a news release Friday. A recording of any violation detected by the system is verified by a police department staff member before a citation is sent to the vehicle’s registered owner, notifying them of the incident.
For the month of July, the system will issue only warnings to those drivers who violate the speed rule through those intersections. Citations will be issued for drivers going 11 mph or more over the speed limit while traveling through the intersection.
