Portland Public Schools leaders this week announced they intend to cut 300 jobs to close a $50 million budget gap. Reporter Julia Silverman outlines the factors hitting the state’s largest district, many of which are also in play in Salem: declining enrollment, rising staffing costs, a larger share of students with disabilities and more complex needs.

Salem-Keizer leaders are preparing for $25 million in cuts and have asked teachers to consider accepting a smaller pay raise to meet that target. District leaders told Salem Reporter they intend to have more specific information about their plans for cuts the first week of February. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
