Good morning, Salem.

From Tuesday, Sept. 5, until Friday, Sept. 8, crews will be combating the invasive Ludwigia plant in the Willamette Slough, visible from Riverfront Park.

Ludwigia is a green, aquatic plant with yellow flowers originally from South America. Though it looks pretty, it spreads out and chokes up clear waterways, reducing the space for fish to swim, dropping oxygen levels that fish need to thrive, and blocking sunlight.

The treatment has a blue-green dye, and boaters, swimmers and paddlers are advised to stay clear of the area during treatment and for 24 hours after the last round on Friday.

Willamette Riverkeeper representatives will have a booth at Riverfront Park to talk about the plant and their work to clear the slough.

We spoke with the riverkeepers about the multi-year effort back in July. Read more about it here.
