Good morning, Salem.
More than 100 firefighters supported by air tankers brought the Liberty Fire in south Salem under control by shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday and evacuated residents were allowed back to their homes about three hours later, according to city and council officials.
Evacuation orders for the Liberty Fire south of Salem were downgraded late Wednesday, with the area closest to the fire under a Level 2 – Be Set order.
Firefighters continued to monitor the fire overnight. City officials said no injuries were reported and a damage assessment will be completed Thursday.
“Thursday’s weather shows an increase in wind, high temperatures, and low humidity. South Salem residents should continue to stay informed, be ready to leave if conditions worsen, and have a plan to relocate to a safe place,” according to a late night statement from Trevor Smith, a city public information officer.
