Good morning, Salem.

The Salem-Keizer NAACP is working with Western Oregon University to offer scholarship opportunities for high school seniors of color planning to attend a college, university or career or technical school.

The branch is also hosting an essay contest commemorating Juneteenth open to elementary, middle and high school students.

Three students will be selected for a one-time award of $1,500 from the NAACP. One student will be selected for the Western Oregon University Diversity Commitment Scholarship, which provides up to $6,500 a year for five years.

The scholarship opportunities are available to students of color, and require a minimum GPA of 2.5.

The application includes a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, counselor or administrator and a 3-4 page essay about either the student’s perspective on book banning or problems within K-12 schools.

Applications are due May 31, by emailing Dr. Irvin M. Brown at [email protected]. For more information, see the application or email Dr. Brown.
